The Honorable John G. "Jack" Lowther

Judge Lowther has been a District Judge in the civil division since February 14, 2002, and is currently the Presiding District Judge of the civil division.  Prior to becoming a judge, he practiced law for over twenty-seven years.  His law practice was general civil with an emphasis in commercial transactions, insurance subrogation and creditor/debtor transactions.  For two years, he taught Business Law and Estates and Trusts at The University of Alabama in the business school.  From 1980 until becoming a district judge, Judge Lowther served as a part-time municipal court judge for Vestavia Hills.  He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys in 1995.

He was elected President of the Alabama District Judges Association for 2008-2009.  Judge Lowther previously served as vice president, secretary and treasurer of the Association.  Presently he is the Vice-Chairman of the Education Committee, and the chairman of the Judicial Access to Justice Committee.  He was appointed to serve as a commissioner on the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center Commission from 2008-2009.  The Chief Justice appointed Judge Lowther to serve on the Technology Commission, Chief Justice Legislative Liaison Committee, the Alabama Judicial System’s Forms Committee; the Weighted Case Load Committee to determine the number of judges needed in Alabama; and the Realignment of Judicial Resources Committee.

Judge Lowther was the 2008 recipient of the Judge Drayton N. James Award voted on by the Young Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association.  This award is given to a state or federal judge in recognition and appreciation of his or her guidance and friendship to the members of the Young Lawyer’s Section.

Judge Lowther is a member of the Alabama Judicial College Faculty and is a frequent speaker at the biannual meetings of the Alabama District and Circuit Judges.  For the last two years he has spoken on general civil law to the new judges at the annual orientation programs.  He has also spoken to the Alabama Judicial Assistants, the Alabama Court Clerks, and the Alabama Court Specialists, and has also spoken to the Birmingham, Bessemer, Walker County and Magic City Bar Associations and Section seminars.

Prior to becoming a District Judge, Judge Lowther was an active member of the State Municipal Judges Association where he was elected to serve as President and Vice President; and was also Chairman of the Education Committee, and speaker at municipal court judicial education conferences.  He also served as vice-chairman of the State Advisory Committee on Municipal Courts; was a member of the Permanent Study Commission on Alabama’s Judicial System; a member of the State of Alabama special task force on the future of the Juvenile Court’s jurisdiction, structure and administration; and a member of the State of Alabama Judicial Advisory Committee on the implementation of the Mandatory Treatment Act of 1990, concerning alcohol and drug related offenses.

Judge Lowther earned both his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Alabama.  In law school he and his partner David Smith were winners of the John A. Campbell Moot Court Competition, and Judge Lowther was a member of the National Moot Court Team.  He was a member of the John A. Campbell Moot Court Board.  He was selected as a member of the Order of Barristers.
