The goal of this project is to implement a 2-year pilot lawyer mentoring program in Jefferson County, Alabama that will assist new lawyer participants transition from law school to professional law practice by emphasizing proper ethical and professional conduct.
The project sponsors are:
- The Judicial Councils of the Alabama Lawyers Association / Magic City Bar Association;
- The Birmingham Inn of Court
- The Diversity Task Force and Solo Practice / Small Firm Section of the Birmingham Bar Association; and
- The Greater Birmingham Defense Lawyers Association.
Qualifying new lawyers (i.e. those working full-time as attorneys) are paired with a mentor for a one-on-one mentoring experience; during their first meeting in September they will tailor make a "Mentoring Plan" by selecting certain topics/activities to complete. New lawyers not qualifying for a one-on-one mentor will be able to participate in a "group mentoring" alternative whereby a number of new lawyers are paired with a mentor; they too will meet on a monthly basis, but as a group. All participating new lawyers will also attend court sessions held at various courthouses in order to gain practical insight on how the different divisions in Jefferson County (Birmingham) operate.
