The Honorable Michael G. Graffeo

After securing the nomination of the Democratic Party by winning the Primary Run-off, Judge Graffeo won the General Election in November, 2006, to a full term and assumed the bench in January, 2007.  Judge Graffeo is a Birmingham native, a graduate of U.A.B. [’76, B.A.], and a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law [’79, J.D.].  After law school and admission to the bar in ’79, he clerked in U.S. District Court, N.D.AL., for the U.S. Magistrates.  After that and until his election, Judge Graffeo practiced law continuously in Birmingham, as a member of two different mid-sized firms for over 10 years, and, as a solo, general practitioner for 15 years.  In the early ‘80’s he served for 3 years as City Lobbyist and Administrative Assistant to the Mayor of the City of Birmingham, and in 1987 was elected to the City Council of the City of Birmingham.  Throughout his professional career, Judge Graffeo been very active in a variety of local civic [including Leadership Birmingham ‘04] and Bar programs [including Volunteer Lawyers Program], and remains an Associate Member of both the ALABAMA STATE BAR and the BIRMINGHAM BAR ASSOCIATION.  He is also an active member of the ALABAMA CIRCUIT JUDGES ASSOCIATION.  In February, 2010, the YOUNG LAWYERS SECTION of the BIRMINGHAM BAR ASSOCIATION honored Judge Graffeo by awarding him the JUDGE DRAYTON N. JAMES AWARD, an award given annually in memory of the late Judge James to a current Judge who actively supports, guides and befriends young attorneys.
